Ty Foster – Lick puppies vs. Lick

Elle:
How did you become involved with photography? Do you remember your first camera?

Ty Foster:

I became involved in photography while studying abroad during college. Prior to traveling I went and purchased my first DSLR and I photographed everything and anything – all the while falling in love with photography. I believe everyone eventually encounters something unintentionally that sparks a passion in them and for me that encounter for me just happened to be studying abroad. I am not sure what my very first camera was, I remember it being a bright orange, flat, rectangle. The second camera though, that was a Olympus camedia c900. I remember that one vividly.

Elle:
What interested you about becoming a dog and animal photographer?

Ty Foster:

I have no idea. A subconscious pull I suppose. After graduating college I began to second shoot weddings with another photographer. In addition to photographing with her, I started photographing a few dogs here and there and it just took off. Growing up I wanted to be a vet, I think I’ve always had an interest in animals. However, after finding out that vets do other things besides just hang out with the animals, I decided to forgo becoming a vet and I suppose this was the next best thing.

Elle:
Tell me something about your latest projects called “Lick” and “Lick puppies”.
What challenges did you face and how did you handle it?

Ty Foster:

Well with any project involving peanut butter, trying to keep it from getting EVERYWHERE was certainly a challenge! In addition to the peanut butter, finding puppies to photograph proved to be difficult but eventually we were able to find some rescues and puppy stores and everything worked out beautifully!

Elle:
What is the one photograph that you are most proud of?

Ty Foster:

For the LICK book series, I have to say the image(s) that I am most proud of is probably Pancakes from the first book and Sparky from LICK puppies. Every time I look at those two images I always find myself laughing. As for an a single photograph from my entire career, I’d have to stay the Rhodesian in an old barn in front of a bunch of drying apple boxes. It’s the fifth image in my ‘on location’ portfolio online.

Elle:
What is your dream project?

Ty Foster:

I have two. The first would be documenting Presidents/ politicians with their dogs. Nothing posed, just the individual interacting with their dog on a day-day basis. A slice of life type of project and the second would be working with the paramilitary and documenting their lives with their dogs. Those would definitely be dream projects.
