The Urban Yoga – How does your city feel?

Elle:
When was your very first introduction to yoga?

Anja Humljan:

When I was 12 years old a family friend, who has been teaching yoga for many years, showed me some yoga poses. It was on the seaside and we were doing yoga in front of our tent. At the age of 18, when my career as a track and field runner was coming to an end and new focuses started to arise, I was looking for something that would bring me closer to my body and to who I am, being able to reach for the true potential that life intended for me. I contacted her again and started visiting her regular yoga classes. She soon taught me how to teach yoga, passed all her valuable information and experiences to me. When I was 19 years old I begun subbing her classes and soon I got my own group. I have been teaching yoga ever since. It has been for thirteen years now. She is on of the most important persons in my life. She did not only teach me yoga, but she taught me how to live: how to conquer and savor all there is. To me she is a wonder woman and she will always be a part of who I am.

Elle:
Tell us something to your way of thinking and acting for your work “The Urban Yoga”?

Anja Humljan:

I am furthermost an architect in addition to being a yoga teacher. The role of an architect is not only to build structures, but to build bridges between the respected field all of those, who use our structures on a daily basis. I am doing this with The Urban Yoga. It is not yoga as such, but an architectural research exploring a dialogue between our sensuous body and the contemporary city. Ever more people are convinced that urban environment limits our freedom, causes stress and keeps us constantly alert. However, the urban environment should not be regarded as something, which disturbs our harmony, but rather as a vital element that contributes to it. By focusing on what we touch, smell, taste, see and hear every space can become a source of positive energy. A place that recalls memories, tells stories, and nests your dreams. It is not geometry and function, but subconscious sensory experience that defines most whether we feel good in a certain space. The Urban Yoga is contributing to a less stressful and more positive urban life, by inviting architects to design architecture that is not only visually and technologically stunning, but is designed with human senses in mind. Therefore, the word yoga in the name of the project: Just like in yoga, where your body becomes your special space, urban environment designed with human senses in mind can also become a place of self-reflection and self-realization.

Elle:
What are you passionate about besides your work and yoga?

Anja Humljan:

I am a passionate reader. Novels are my delete button. When I return home from the world of responsibilities, I take a book in my hand and I immediately reset and recharge. However, my biggest passion is dance. It is more than that, actually. It is a way of life. I am focusing on the day when I will be able to dedicate to ballet and contemporary dance on a daily basis, obtaining a hard-core drill. I used to do that and I miss it heaps. And where there is dance, there is also music, so you can imagine I can become quite passionate when letting the music into my body, too.
