Die amerikanische Fotografin Stephanie Jarstad veröffentlichte neben dem Projekt “The Twelve Beards of Christmas” nun eine Kalender, namens “A Beard for all Seasons”. Bei diesem werden 12 Bärtige den Monaten entsprechend dargestellt.
Elle:
How did you become involved with photography? Do you remember your first camera?
Stephanie Jarstad:
Photography found me at a young age. As a young girl, I would plan photo shoots with my two best friends. With a disposable camera in hand, we would pose each other and take our film to the drug store to be developed. I really fell in love with photography in high school. I practically lived in the darkroom, and college was the same story. I graduated from Brigham Young University with a BFA in Photography. My first camera was an old Pentax we found in the garage.
Elle:
Tell us something to your way of thinking and acting for your work “A Beard for all seasons”?
Stephanie Jarstad:
A Beard for all Seasons was merely an idea simmering mid-November. I was in line at Starbucks in Seattle, saw a guy with a cool beard thought, “I should do some sort of project to honor the movember, men’s health initiative.” A few different ideas came to mind, until I landed on the idea of a Twelve Month beard calendar. Flower beards were the inspiration, but I wanted to do something different. I decided to decorate a different beard representing a different month of the year. When I got to thinking of ideas for December, I had a surplus of options because craft stores were crawling with Christmas decor this time of year. So instead of just one beard representing December, I decided to do the “Twelve Beards of Christmas.” I put out a casting call for bearded models on facebook and instagram @stephaniejarstad and people tagged their facial-haired friends.
Elle:
Do you feel that the city of seattle influences your creativity?
Stephanie Jarstad:
I think Seattle influences my creativity greatly. Beards are a dime a dozen in Seattle, so I’m sure it’s influenced this project in particular. It’s an incredibly artistic city. I’m very inspired by its lush climate and moody skies and evergreens everywhere. I grew up here, so it’s very much a part of who I am.
Elle:
Would you give a brief walk through your work flow?
Stephanie Jarstad:
For this particular series, I shot it in studio. My set up was fairly complex with three lights and a large reflector. I had a beauty dish as my key light. Then I used a strip light on the right side and a rim light behind the model. I had a piece of sheet metal on a table under the models chin to bounce light back in to their beard. After each shoot, I would process the images in Adobe Lightroom staring the favorites. Then I would pull the final into photoshop.
Elle:
What is your dream project?
Stephanie Jarstad:
My dream projects always include traveling! I definitely have the travel bug. I want to teach humanitarian/travel photography workshops. I want to use photography as a vehicle for awareness, service and social change. I also love commercial lifestyle and fashion photography. I would love to shoot for a publication similar to Kinfolk Magazine.
Elle:
Where do you see yourself in 10 years?
Stephanie Jarstad:
In ten years, I would love to have my work in more fine art galleries internationally and have several workshops under my belt.
