Silvio Medeiros – Selfies From Nature

Elle:
Tell us please about yourself and your creative works! What’s your background?

Silvio Medeiros:

My name is Silvio Medeiros, I’m the creative director of a São Paulo based start-up agency called Heads. I’m in this business for a while, almost 15 years, but this is my first time in a start-up. Most of my career I’ve spent in big agencies, such as JWT, DraftFCB, Lowe etc, always as an art director. During this years I’ve win a few international awards at Cannes Festival, OneShow etc. But without a shadow of a doubt this recent campaign “Selfies From Nature” was my favourite job ever.

Elle:
“Selfies From Nature” is a wonderful project. Tell us a little bit about that project!

Silvio Medeiros:
I’m a Instagram addicted. I’ve been posting photos there (at @smedeiros) every single day during my last 3 years. And I fell pretty comfortable to say that I’ve watched this selfie phenomenon starting from the beginning. I remember to think that was a matter of time to someone use this “language” for a creative idea. This idea occurred to me almost 1 year ago, when I was working with a specific briefing for Diomedia Stock Photos, trying to find a unique selling argument for they new National Geographic Images Collection. The concept was really simple, I’ve just wanted to remember people that if they needed good nature images, they should look upon National Geographic Images. That’s was the first time I draft this idea. At that time, selfies were a familiar language for me, but not for most people, so I’ve been keeping it in my cabinet office. When Ellen Degeneres took that worldwide-famous selfie at the last Oscar ceremony I’ve fought: “Know its the time!”. Two months latter I released the campaign.

Elle:
What work do you most enjoying doing?

Silvio Medeiros:

For me advertising it’s all about good conversation. If the subject it’s simple, fun and likeable, certainly that’s the one who will grab my attention. Selfies From Nature it’s a good example of that.

Elle:
What equipment and software do you make use of in your workflow?

Silvio Medeiros:

I always start with pencil and paper. When my drafts respond my clients needs, that’s when I took them from sheet to computer. Mac, wacom tablet, Cinema Display, Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator, Modo 3d and a lots and lots of artistic books.

Elle:
How does your job as an artist influence your life? Do you feel that you see things around you differently for example?

Silvio Medeiros:

Totally. This is a so dense and complex question that I really don’t have time to explain. Maybe in another occasion, ok?

Elle:
What do you think is the most important factor in making a good picture?

Silvio Medeiros:

Aesthetic techniques such as proper illumination, angle and proportions are surely important, but for me the key factor is to be able to tell a story. Take a quick look to those best-sellers photographs books: it’s all about the story they tell. If your picture don’t tell anything, it won’t last.

Elle:
What is your dream project?

Silvio Medeiros:

My next project. My next project will pay my rent, will allow me to try new things and new perspectives and help me to grow up as an art director. I’m always thirsty and a bit impatient to start my next project.

Elle:
Where do you see yourself in 10 years?

Silvio Medeiros:

Maybe living in Europe with my wife and kids, visiting museums, experiencing a new lifestyle and figuring a way to reinvent my work. God knows.
