Tell us about Julia Fullerton-Batten, the photographer? Is he different than Julia the individual?

Julia Fullerton-Batten:

Married and the mother of two children I run a household. As a fine-art and commercial photographer I run my business. Essentially I don’t distinguish between the two and remain the same person, both as a photographer and an individual, especially as photography and my family are both my life’s passions.

Please tell us more about your background and what made you become a photographer?

Julia Fullerton-Batten:

I am the second child of a family of four children. I was born in Germany. Our mother is German and our father English. When I was two we moved to the USA where we stayed for seven years before returning to Germany. Our parents divorced when I was sixteen and we children moved to England with our father, where I completed my education and have lived since then.

My father was, and still is, a keen amateur photographer. When we were children he had his own makeshift darkroom and was rarely without his camera, either shooting family photos or street scenes whenever he was out and about at home or on business trips in Japan.

Growing up in these different environments and with the background of my father’s hobby I became interested in travelling and taking up photography as a career. After school, I studied photography at college, then became an assistant to professional photographers. During my time as an assistant I toured many countries with my camera, entered many competitions, and built up my portfolio. Images that I took in Vietnam were very successful in competitions, on the basis of which I was signed up by a German agent, who soon got me my first professional assignment, which kick-started my career. I’ve not looked back since.

How do you keep yourself motivated and your photography creative, inspiring and fresh?

Julia Fullerton-Batten:

I have no difficulty in keeping motivated and created as photography is not only my job, but my passion in life (as well as my home life). Every morning when I wake up I feel motivated and creative for the next shoot.

Professionally, what’s your goal?

Julia Fullerton-Batten:

I would like to achieve the pinnacle of recognition among my peers and fine-art connoisseurs as a leading proponent of fine-art photography. I have had a book published, but that was in 2007, it is time to find a new publisher.

What can we expect from you next?

Julia Fullerton-Batten:

I am just about to shoot a project about feral children. These are children that have either been abused, abandoned or brought up by wild animals. As a mother of two boys this subject matter is very close to my heart. There are some brutal and heart-rending cases throughout the centuries. It is a challenging subject matter to photograph in every respect.
