Elle:
How did you become involved with photography?

José Luis Cunha:

Photography appear on my life naturally, it was not on purpose. It was not like: “i wanna be a photographer”. Since a kid I always enjoyed to draw and paint. And i remember as a kid I much i enjoyed to search on all that negatives at the trunk and put them against the sun. I remember how exited i was when my mom got back the films from developing, that was a exiting moment for me to see what was there, what she captures, how it came out. When i got my first computer my favorite hobby was manipulate images, try to improve them and sometimes even do some bizarre modifications, like cut heads off….add some wings.

Finally when I was 15 I bought a digital camera just to capture some moments like birthdays, holidays and all that stuff. And to be honest in the beginning i’ve never used the camera that much. But all the times that i was with my girlfriend she insistes to also bring the camera with me, so I started to carry on the camera with me more often and gradually I fell in love with photography and that power that it give to me to capture that little instant forever to capture the beauty of things the power to show the world how i see the it.

Elle:
How do you pick your models? What kind of features should a model have to work with you?

José Luis Cunha:

The models to my works are selected in two different ways, in the case of comercial works the models are already selected, i don’t have the choice on some of that cases. But to my personal work I select the models with the rest of the team involved, we try to find a model that fits on the concept that we want to represent on that Photoshoot. So there is no specific features to work with me.

Elle:
Where do you find inspiration to make your photographs?

José Luis Cunha:

The inspirations comes from everywhere, I think is unquestionable that we are influenced by all the things that surround us. From other artists no matter the area, the places and even the situations that we live and our mood. I think all of that influence your vision and the way you express yourself through photography. I think it’s very important try to stay up about what’s happening around you.

Elle:
How much time do you spend taking photos versus retouching photos?

José Luis Cunha:

The time spent one each photo depends, but it’s not exaggerated to say that I’ve lost a solid 6 hours on a single photograph. Usually you spend more time retouching then shooting, it’s obvious. There are some people that are totally against photoshop and defend that a photo should be retouching a minimum as possible and they consider thats the real photography.

I think manipulation always was present on photography, it’s nothing new. And there are some works that require more retouch others less retouch. Each artist is free to decide the look of his own photos. Obviously is very important to get the more you can on comera but photoshoot is one more tool to get the final result that you want.

Elle:
Imagine there are no limits or obstacles before you. Which model and which environment do you mostly want to work with?

José Luis Cunha:

We can always dream about what would be the best photoshoot that you could do. For me, it would be at a palace, full of big windows and gold details. For the models probably Catherine McNeil, probably one of my favorite models.

Elle:
Where do you see yourself five years from now?

José Luis Cunha:

In five years I would love to continue working in photography, thats for sure. That’s my passion and I fell so lucky to be able to live working on what I love. I want to improve my skills, grow as photographer, learn more and and one day possibly work with the most prestigious brands and magazines, it’s hard to enter on that market but hopefully with work and some luck things can happen.
