Elle:
How did you become involved with photography? Do you remember your first camera?

Jason McGroarty:

I have always been very visual, as a young boy I would draw, paint, stack things together, anything to create something. However I would get bored and want to move on from each very easily, that was until I got my hands on a camera for the first time. I uncovered so much potential, finally I had found a medium of expression that would fit perfectly into my life. Within a few months photography had engulfed my life and I receive my first ever DSLR as a gift from my loved ones. It was a Nikon D3100 with an 18-55mm lens and 2 years later I use the same camera, of course new lenses come into play every now and then. However, expensive equipment and flashy gear was never my thing, I needed something to facilitate the creation of my ideas and a camera was all I needed.

Elle:
Tell us something to your way of thinking and acting for your work “A Place To Go, Please”?

Jason McGroarty:

A Place To Go was originally the idea of Communication Designer Karen McDermott, we wanted to communicate the relationship between various drink cultures and their associated places and personalities. With the use of creative editorial photography and intricate Photoshop techniques we did just that. London play homage to enjoying a cup of tea over a butter scone and a light afternoon read while Asia depicts buckets of culture and tradition through one small sacci cup.

Elle:
How much preparation goes into one of your works?

Jason McGroarty:

My process can vary, at times the prep can be long and laborious while others can be spontaneous and playful. However on most projects I like to put a lot of effort into them, not only do I want my viewers to see an aesthetically pleasing and accurate piece but if they decide to look deep within, a message should resonate and stay with them.

Elle:
How do you keep yourself motivated and your works creative, inspiring and fresh?

Jason McGroarty:

Inspiration comes in many forms. From a young age my mother taught me to look beyond the ordinary and this has stayed with me through my life. Every time I have an idea, I write it in a black cloth journal with a leather strap and develop them as days go by. I always have something to work on and I think that it is important to do so. Photography is something that my life revolves around and it takes dedication just like any other job. It’s important to keep up to date with the things happening around you and to always learn something new so I do my research and dedicate time to fine tune my skills.
