Elle:
Tell us a little bit about yourself. What sparked your interest in photography? Have you had any formal training or just talent and practice?
Donat Boulerice:
I grew up in a small town outside of Ottawa (Ontario). My mother was a high school art teacher and she got me a camera for my 7th birthday. I played around with it thru my childhood but it’s only when I turned 20 that I decided I wanted to make it a career. Since my parents were both teachers and really into me having some kind of degree. I enrolled into a photography program at a local college in Ottawa. I didn’t think formal training was absolutely necessary, but it did give me the opportunity to practice a lot. If the assignment required 1 roll of film, I would go out and shoot 10. Practice makes perfect in this industry.
Elle:
What makes a really great portrait?
Donat Boulerice:
I think it all comes down to the emotion you get out of your subject. Something need to be happening, wether it’s in the movement, the composition or the expression. A really great portrait should give the viewer a reason to look at the image. Draw them in.
Elle:
What is your typical camera setup on a shoot?
Donat Boulerice:
I shoot on which ever tool is the best for the job at hand. Sometimes I shoot on a medium format with a digital back, sometimes it’s a little fujifilm range finder or a DSLR. Everyone camera setup has it’s strengths and weaknesses.
Elle:
How would you describe your current work?
Donat Boulerice:
I think my work right now is very moody and sensual. I like it when the images have some kind of drama in them. Either in the models expressions or with the overall mood and lighting. I plan on continuing on this path for quite some time.
Elle:
What do you enjoy most about being a photographer?
Donat Boulerice:
I think the reason I’m still enjoying this job very much is the actually photography part. Working with a team trying to create a moment that doesn’t yet exist gets me excited. It doesn’t happen every time I pick up a camera but chasing it is what makes it fun. Like seduction, sometimes the chase is the best part.
Elle:
What is you dream project?
Donat Boulerice:
I really want to work on a book project at some point in my career. I’ve been shooting a few projects here and there that could work for that. I’m just waiting for everything to line up.
