Elle:
How did you start out in photography? Do you remember your first camera?

Antoine Duchamp:

I took the camera (Canon 400D) of my mother and I went to the Zoo (at the Jardin des Plantes, in Paris). That’s how I started out in photography. I’m not going to the zoo anymore. Going there very often helped me to realize that it’s probably not the best place for animals to live in and there are other ways to protect animals and wildlife.

Elle:
Would you give a brief walk through your work flow?

Antoine Duchamp:

The workflow really depends of the project. If it’s a test-shoot for a model agency, the workflow won’t be the same as if it’s an editorial, etc. I don’t have a typical workflow. But if I really have to name steps, I would say 1) having an idea and find a magazine OR a magazine/client get in touch with you, 2) Moodboard time, 3) Make a team, 4) find the model(s) that fit perfectly, 5) shoot, 6) edit

Elle:
How do you pick your models? What kind of features should a model have to work with you?

Antoine Duchamp:

I’m going through agencies’ websites very often, and I’m like “Woooooah” every 2 seconds. Sometime I add profiles I really like to my browser’s favorites, but I mainly keep them in mind. I can’t even really say what “features” I do really like, but I know I get a bit upset when models have “fake” breast, lips, etc. I love big eyes and eyebrows (Cara if you see this, I love you <3). I don’t have a “favorite profile”, but if I had to name a few top models who really inspire me and that I really like their profiles, I would name Grace Bol as the most inspiring girl, and then Natalia Vodianova, Grace Mahary, Yumi Lambert, Anais Mali, … and probably a lot I don’t think of. I’m really open to different profiles.

Elle:
How much time do you spend taking photos versus retouching photos?

Antoine Duchamp:

I don’t retouch a lot my pictures. Light, saturation, contrast and a bit the skin. So it’s pretty fast to edit to be honest. I would say it’s 1/3 taking the pictures, 2/3 retouching them. If we only take those two steps in the process. Because there is a lot of things before taking the pictures and retouching them.

Elle:
How has your shooting style and work ethic changed in time?

Antoine Duchamp:

As the saying says, “We learn from failures” (I think it’s this in english, not sure about my translation). My work ethic changed a lot while I failed at shoots. I really take time now to explain to my team what I want, to really take a deep look into portfolios of make-up artists, hair stylists, wardrobe stylists etc before taking them into my team for a shoot. I have no idea how to describe my shooting style. A lot of black and white, lot of contrast. And my “shooting style” during the shoot, I think I like to take time to knowing a little bit the people I work with. I ask them about their life, their last shoots, what they like in fashion, modeling, etc … We can always learn things from everybody.

Elle:
What is you dream project?

Antoine Duchamp:

Well, I have some crazy ideas in my mind, but I can’t tell them ! The “dream project” I can talk about would be … mmmh. It’s not specifically a commercial job. I would say shooting for Vogue but it’s kinda cliché. It’s not in fashion. I’m a big rap fan, (french and american rap). I think it would be shooting rappers as they are very old. Like 70. Eminem, KRS One, Jay Z, Akhenaton, Lil Wayne, Rick Ross etc … in their 70s. Make a big book of portraits of them very old. I don’t like all of them, I have my preferences, but they are today’s icons of this music style. Icons of my generation (I’m 21).
