Elle:
How did you discover you had a talent for interior design?

Whatshisname:

I didn’t discover the talent for interior design, as much as I was really bored with the popular furniture designs. In early high school, I started creating my first pieces just for myself. Later I have been working as an assistant to well established artists, who I shared my designs and sketches with and they encouraged me to make them reality.

Elle:
Can you remember your first design project?

Whatshisname:

I think my first design was a small lamp made out of orange TicTac boxes and a small light bulb from the old flashlight. Either this or when I decorated my room door with half cut CDs, that looked as if they were stuck in the door and bleeding.

Elle:
Would you give a brief walk through your work flow?

Whatshisname:

The ideas usually pop in randomly. Sometimes I am asked to design a specific item ie table or lamp in certain style, but I find it very difficult to force creativity. Usually I am not trying to design anything specific but rather research other people’s work, look for inspirations and think, how can we make it totally different. I always write down my ideas, do a small sketch and wait few months to see if I still like them then. If so, I would do a digital version or 3d visualisation of the piece. alternatively a cutout paper model. Sometimes at this stage I would decide that the piece looked better in my head and needs changes. Once I am happy with the digital version or a small model, I can carry on with production. At this stage I would know what materials to use or what color and finish I am after.

Elle:
Your style has been described as maverick and witty. Do you see it that way?

Whatshisname:

I can see why someone would think that it is maverick and witty. There is a good quote from one of the Die Antwoord songs: “F**k the System, We have our own System, We don’t answer to no one”. It has been my motto for some time. I am not trying to follow any specific art guidelines, but rather create my own thing and have fun with it. Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn’t. I would like the first impression to my work be “What is that? I want it”

Elle:
Tell us something to your way of thinking and acting for your work “pooping dog lamps”?

Whatshisname:

The pooping dog lamps from the very inception were something that put a smile on my face and as I later discovered on a lot of other people’s faces. I think they are simply different to other animal related furniture, because of their poses. Most of the contemporary furniture features animals in a very ordinary way. I wanted to achieve the “Oh My God.. Look at that, it is so funny” factor. I had a laugh at every stage of their design and the audience’s response to the lamps was fantastic.

Elle:
If you had no limits, what would you create?

Whatshisname:

If I had no limits, I would create much large scale designs, visible from the distance. For example a massive around 10 meter tall statue of a scared 5 year old boy sitting next to the Imperial War Museum holding a colorful WWII gas mask in his hands.

Elle:
Where do you see yourself in 10 years?

Whatshisname:

In 10 years I can see myself running much larger studio creating not only tangible, but also digital art ie. animation, large scale projections. The work that a lot of people could see at the same time, but only see once or twice and make it leave an impression on you. The work that you would come back to in your memory long time after you saw it and discover something new about it.
