Elle:
Tell us please about yourself and your creative works! What’s your background?
Tânia Santos:
My name is Tânia Santos, i was born in 1982 in Portugal, i live in Ponte de Lima (nothern of Portugal) and i studied Fashion Design and Marketing at the University of Minho, where I also did a short course in photography.
My works are very detailled and sometimes inspired on japonese Anime/manga style, especially my older works because I am a big fun of that style. At this moment I am working a more realistic style and making experiences until I find a style I can say I love.
Elle:
How does your job as an artist influence your life? Do you feel that you see things around you differently for example?
Tânia Santos:
Well, i am a fashion designer so many people will say that fashion designers are not artists, but i disagree, because we do art too but with fabrics/cloth. Saying that, I can say fashion and illustration influence a lot, because I always look to all around me trying to find inspiration or looking for details. Sometimes details from a simple object can inspire my creations or illustrations. I think artist always looks at the world and life in a different way, everything can be our source of inspiration and be converted into art.
Elle:
What fascinates them most about the fashion?
Tânia Santos:
Perhaps the beauty, the movement, the colors and how fashion can influence so many people.
Elle:
What equipment and software do you make use of in your workflow?
Tânia Santos:
My favourite software for my fashion drawings or illustrations is Photoshop, maybe because i am faster using that one. But i like SAI, and Corel Draw or Illustrator for my technical drawings.
Elle:
Where do you get inspiration for works of fashion illustrations?
Tânia Santos:
I can say my favourite source are the fashion magazines or internet (like pinterest, tumblr, Deviantart,…) because i always make research when i do not have inspiration and is a perfect place for random inspiration…
Elle:
What’s the best piece of advice you’ve been given?
Tânia Santos:
I don´t remembre any big advice, but one that comes to my mind at this moment was one of my teachers at university who tell me to work more with illustration and give it a more realistic look (because at that time my drawings had anime faces and that make them very childish) and a friend of mine who remember me that my digital works looked better so I should follow this path…
I can say I heard both and both were right, I like how I work now, even if I am always trying to explore different materials or styles…I think i´m still searching for my permanent style.
Elle:
Any upcoming project?
Tânia Santos:
At this moment i am working in an little accessories collection but later them should also be converted into fashion illustrations.
