Elle:
When and how did you begin to see yourself as an artist?
Sandra Jawad:
I’ve always known I had the talent to draw but I still think I’m in the process of becoming an artist. Trying to better myself and what I do.
Elle:
Tell us please about yourself and your creative works! What’s your background?
Sandra Jawad:
I’m a 29 year old Londoner with a degree in Fashion Illustration. For the longest time I thought I wanted to be a fashion designer but having done a course on it I quickly found that it wasn’t for me and what I really wanted to do was just draw but still within the realms of fashion. I think my signature is that of black and white portraits and fashion drawings usually done with pencils and then added digital work. I definitely think that if you see one of my piece then you can tell it’s me, which I’m happy about.
Elle:
What’s the best and worst parts of being a full time, working artist?
Sandra Jawad:
I think it’s mostly all pros to being a full time artist, working on your own timetable, working from home doing what I love! I guess the wort bits are if the work is not consistent then that can be a hindrance to the bank balance or if you get a difficult client then it can make the job less enjoyable. But on the whole I think it’s amazing.
Elle:
How do you keep yourself motivated and your illustrations creative, inspiring and fresh?
Sandra Jawad:
I’m always looking at social media (instagram, tumblr) for inspiration to include in a new piece. I think I tend to go through phases, ie. adding pops of colour to pieces, or making a series of collages etc. I don’t think I actively try to do something different I just try to produce something that make me happy and satisfied.
Elle:
Where do you see yourself five years from now?
Sandra Jawad:
5 years from now I just hope that I can say fashion illustrator is my career, I just want to be working for myself doing what I love to do.
Elle:
What can we expect from you next?
Sandra Jawad:
I’ve not got any immediate plans I’ll be continuing my personal work as well as working for various clients. I’m always open to doing creative collaborations though, it’s great to work on a project with another creative and see what you can produce.
