Tell us a little bit about yourself. How did you start out in photography?
Hey there! My name is Jay, I just turned 21 and from Chicago! I started photography a year ago and I started because I was going through a rough time in my life where I was dealing with depression and coming in and out of the hospital for my depression and suicide attempts and cutting. It was to the point in my life where I was getting desperate to do something and actually one of my friend’s sister needed a video cameraman for her wedding and I was the one they asked. I’ve never done anything like it and it was my first job that had anything to do with photography. After the wedding, I decided to ask one of my friends to model for me a couple of weeks later and fell in love with it and got obsessed and that was when I finally found something I was passionate about.
Describe a real-life situation that inspired you?
One night after hanging out, me and 3 of my friends were talking outside of one of the boy’s house. We were hanging out and laughing and talking about photography and the subject of what we wanna actually accomplish came up. 3 of us were photographers and 1 was a signed model. It was so moving because everyone was so passionate and so determined. We built each other up and wanted to help each other and made sure each one was gonna go far in what ever we wanted to do. We asked each one how we could help and what we needed to do. I think that was the night that really inspired me to actually follow my dream and focus on what I need to do and always try to get better and not worry about anyone and what they say anymore.
Can you name some photographers that inspires you with their works and why?
I’m very picky when deciding who inspires me, especially photographers just because I look at everything they do not just their work. But one photographer that inspires me the most is my friend Paulo ( @pauhlo ). I think everything about how he carries himself and the creativity that he has and the positive attitude he has and his view on the world is what stands out to me. He’s always there to give me advice about literally everything not just photography. He keeps to himself and he’s very positive and he’s humble and he has a vision on what he wants and knows how to get it.
Where do you see yourself in 10 years?
In 10 years, I see myself living. As simple as that answer is, it’s very important to me, if you asked me this question 2 years ago, I wouldn’t be able to answer it. I would love to travel the world and take photos of everything and everyone. I want to be able to have my own studio to do my fashion work and be respected in the world of photography and someone who everyone can look up to. Fame isn’t something I want and I’m not in this for the money, this is my passion and what kept me going and I’m confident this is what God wants me to do for the rest of my life.
