Car Park House! Im Interview mit den Architekten Anonymous ArchitectsDesign , am 09. März 2015 in
What originally made you want to study architecture and become an architect?
I love the potential of architecture to define and shape how we use space and how we relate to the outside environment. I also love that buildings can be useful and beautiful at the same time. I think very few products managed to achieve that which is why there is so much waste in landfills and oceans. A well-conceived, practical building has a purpose so it will be maintained and used forever – or at least for a very long time.
Tell us something to your way of thinking and acting for your work „Car Park House“?
Much of the design of the house is the result of applying building codes and figure out how to respond to a small budget. For example parking on the roof combines the garage and the house foundation into one – so there is less foundation work overall. Also the maximum height of the house was determined to be at street level. So the combination of those two factors results in the design.
Creatively I wanted a very simple box cantilevered over the hillside. Conceptually I like this idea of a basic volume that seems to resist the forces of gravity and floats.
Who or what has been the biggest influence on your work to date?
I follow European architects mostly. There is a great diversity of cultures in Europe and also an appreciation of new and interesting design approaches so naturally this leads to a great variety of architecture that is constantly evolving.
What are you passionate about besides your work?
Los Angeles is a city of movement and mobility and at the core of this is the automobile. The automobile represents freedom of movement and in Los Angeles there are incredible mountain roads for driving. So that would be my second passion.
What is you dream project?
A skyscraper. I think there is so much imagination lacking with this type of building. My firm recently entered a skyscraper competition and it was a bream just to spend some time working out the details and the design. I don’t expect we’ll do well in the competition but that doesn’t matter.
